The Life
Born in the Crimean port of Feodosia to an Armenian family, Hovhannes Aivazovsky rose through the Imperial Academy in St Petersburg to become the official painter of the Russian Navy. Astonishingly prolific, he produced some six thousand works over his long career and travelled widely, yet returned always to his native coast, where he founded an art school and gallery. He remained, to the end, the supreme poet of the sea.
