The Master
Pierre-Auguste Renoir
The Impressionist of joy — dappled light, blushing skin and the pleasure of an ordinary afternoon made eternal.
“He gave Impressionism its most tender and pleasurable face, an art devoted wholly to beauty, warmth and the joy of ordinary life. His images of Parisian leisure remain among the most beloved in all of painting.”
The Life
Pierre-Auguste Renoir began as an apprentice painting flowers on porcelain in Limoges, a trade that shaped his lifelong love of luminous colour. In the 1860s he joined Monet, Sisley and Bazille to help forge Impressionism, and painted its most joyous crowd scenes, the Bal du moulin de la Galette and the Luncheon of the Boating Party. In later life he moved toward a warmer, more classical style of full-bodied nudes, painting on to the end despite the crippling arthritis of his final years.
The Hand
Renoir's brushwork is soft, feathery and caressing, dissolving edges into a shimmer of dappled sunlight. He is above all the painter of luminous flesh — rosy, glowing skin rendered in warm, pearly tones that make his figures seem to breathe.
The Legacy
He gave Impressionism its most tender and pleasurable face, an art devoted wholly to beauty, warmth and the joy of ordinary life. His images of Parisian leisure remain among the most beloved in all of painting.
The Market
A pillar of the Impressionist market, Renoir's Bal du moulin de la Galette sold for US$78.1 million in 1990, then among the highest prices ever paid for a painting; his best works remain in constant demand.
