He transformed ordinary domestic moments into images of timeless stillness and mystery, above all the Girl with a Pearl Earring. Rediscovered late, he is now counted among the greatest painters who ever lived.

The Life

Johannes Vermeer spent his entire life in the Dutch town of Delft, where he worked slowly and sold locally, serving as head of the painters' guild. He left barely thirty-five known paintings, most of them quiet interiors bathed in northern daylight. Never wealthy, he died in debt at forty-three, and his name faded almost entirely until the nineteenth century, when critics rediscovered him as one of the supreme masters of European art.

The Hand

Vermeer is unrivalled in the rendering of daylight — soft, even light falling through a leaded window across plaster, cloth and pearl. He built form with tiny beads of paint (the pointillé highlight), luminous glazes and costly ultramarine, and may have studied optical effects through the camera obscura.

The Legacy

He transformed ordinary domestic moments into images of timeless stillness and mystery, above all the Girl with a Pearl Earring. Rediscovered late, he is now counted among the greatest painters who ever lived.

The Market

With only about thirty-five paintings in existence, nearly all in major museums, a Vermeer virtually never comes to market; each is regarded as a priceless treasure of the Dutch Golden Age.
