He gave the Renaissance its most enchanting images of beauty and myth, and the Birth of Venus has become one of the best-loved paintings in the world. His rediscovery reshaped modern taste for the early Italian masters.

The Life

A leading painter of Florence's golden age under Lorenzo de' Medici, Sandro Botticelli created for that cultivated circle the mythologies that define the early Renaissance — the Birth of Venus and the Primavera. In later years, swept up in the fervour of the preacher Savonarola, his art grew more austere and devout. He fell from fashion after his death and lay half-forgotten for centuries until the Pre-Raphaelites and Victorian critics restored him to glory.

The Hand

Botticelli's supreme gift is line — a flowing, lyrical, almost musical contour that gives his figures their weightless grace. Working in tempera, he favoured pale, delicate colour and elongated, ethereal forms poised between naturalism and pure poetic idealisation.

The Legacy

He gave the Renaissance its most enchanting images of beauty and myth, and the Birth of Venus has become one of the best-loved paintings in the world. His rediscovery reshaped modern taste for the early Italian masters.

The Market

Botticelli's works are exceedingly rare on the market; his portrait Young Man Holding a Roundel sold for US$92.2 million in 2021, one of the highest prices ever paid for an Old Master painting.
