The Master
Rabindranath Tagore
The Nobel poet who painted. Tagore's late, dreamlike works — creatures and faces from an inner world — are among the most haunting in Indian art.
“His late paintings revealed that the great poet was also a radically modern visual artist, and they remain among the most original and haunting works in Indian art. They are protected as National Art Treasures.”
The Life
India's Nobel laureate poet, Rabindranath Tagore, came to painting only in his sixties, almost by accident, as the crossings-out in his manuscripts grew into rhythmic forms. Once begun, he worked with astonishing energy, producing some two thousand works in his final decade and exhibiting to acclaim across Europe. Untaught and unconstrained, he opened an entirely new expressive frontier in Indian art.
The Hand
Tagore drew and painted intuitively, in dark, brooding inks and colour washes, conjuring strange faces, birds, beasts and dreamlike figures from the subconscious. Free of academic rule, his line is spontaneous, rhythmic and haunting — closer to modern European expression than to anything then in India.
The Legacy
His late paintings revealed that the great poet was also a radically modern visual artist, and they remain among the most original and haunting works in Indian art. They are protected as National Art Treasures.
The Market
As National Treasure works held largely in institutions, his paintings seldom reach the market; their rarity and his towering cultural stature place them among the most historically significant of Indian works.
