Raja Ravi Varma: The People's Painter

How one artist put the gods of India onto the walls of ordinary homes.

Raja Ravi Varma (1848–1906) fused European academic technique with Indian mythological subjects, and then — revolutionarily — printed them by the thousand so ordinary families could hang the divine at home.

His luminous portraits of Damayanti, Saraswati and Shakuntala remain among the most reproduced images in Indian history. Infinity brings them back to museum grade.
